This year we decide
d to have a little bit of fun with the kids' Christmas card. These kids love to dress up and they love their picture taken.
Our Christmas tradition: After dark on Christmas Eve we all go for a ride to look at lights (and Santa's sleigh or Rudolph's nose in the sky). While we are out, Santa comes! When we get back home there are gifts in front of the tree, stockings are full, cookies and milk are gone. Our whole family left the house together and locked the doors on the way out. I believed in Santa till I was almost a teen. We know the meaning of Christmas, but the innocence of kids who believe in Santa is delightful, it makes the joy of Christmas that much better. So, we decided to follow our old traditions with the nieces and nephews this year. While Grandma, Grandpa and the kids were out for their ride, my husband Cru and I went over to put out the gifts, etc. Cru actually dressed up as Santa (without the beard, just the suit). As they pulled up in the drive way, Cru was bent over at the front door. The kids saw the red suit and began screaming "He's here!" and "I see Santa!". They ran up to the house as Cru ran out the back door. Once in the living room the kids forgot about Santa, they were distracted by all the new bikes and toys under the tree. Cru jumped the fence and dropped the costume around the side of the house. He and I came in the side door, the kids never suspected. It probably helps that they are only 2, 3, 4 and 5, but it was great. : )
Last year, the kids dressed up as characters from Winnie the Pooh. This year we went with the Wizard of Oz. Mom made all of the costumes, which turned out to be awesome. Cameron had paint on his hands so he kept holding them out in front of him, kinda worked for his Tin-Man character. Brandi (the girly girl) was Dorothy with her red glitter shoes, Toto and all. Crystina is kinda clumsy, so she was perfect as Scarecrow. Ali was last to walk up to each house, as the cowardly Lion of course! We're already working the plan for next year's theme...
So, we had another great LONG weekend at the Oktoberfest in Helen, Ga. My Nana is German so this has been a tradition for the last 10 years. It is always fun, but even more so with the munchkins. The kids are older this year and they knew what to expect so they had a blast. When we left the Festhalle on Saturday night, Crystina said "Now we have to go home tomorrow, no more dancing". We left early on Thursday morning. Cameron came and woke me up by saying "I think you need to get up, we get out of bed when the sun comes up", the sun wasn't even up yet! It's about an 8 hour drive. The kids love to get dressed up and they looked so cute. Mom made them special dirndls for Saturday night and the girls looked like angels.
One of the bands Pros't was wonderful. Not every day do you see a German polka band that plays everything from Edelwiess to Free Bird. Cameron went tubing down the Chattahoochee river and we did a little shopping and eating too. Of course, I also had to pick up some of our favorite Scarlet Fox wine. We found that the old Wurst Haus where the Oktoberfest in Helen began
actually burnt down last year. And, our old friend that played the
accordian at Mom and Gary's wedding passed away at 91. All in all we had a great time as usual and I'll look forward to it again next year.
I tried to use the movie feature on my camera to capture some of the band, it is really shaky and I had to dodge all the kids, but you get the point.
